Abstract
Background: Spontaneous abortion is a major public health issue, particularly in developing countries. It is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality. This study aims to describe the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, and therapeutic characteristics of spontaneous abortions at Cheikh Zayed Hospital (CHZ) in Nouakchott. Methods: A prospective descriptive study was conducted from August 1, 2023, to January 1, 2024, in the maternity ward of CHZ. All patients admitted for spontaneous abortion before 22 weeks of amenorrhea were included. Data were collected using a standardized questionnaire and analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2021. Results: The study included 100 patients. The average age was 28 years. Housewives accounted for 62%. Most patients resided in Toujounine (48%). Gestational age ranged from 6 to 9 weeks in 45% of cases. Clinically, 99% presented with vaginal bleeding, and 65% had pelvic pain. Ultrasound revealed intrauterine debris in 99% of cases. Misoprostol was the most commonly used treatment (93%). Conclusion: Spontaneous abortions primarily affect young women with poor prenatal follow-up. Enhancing antenatal care and health education is essential.
