Abstract
The study investigates the determinants influencing the reading performance of Grade 5 students at D. Tuazon Elementary School. It highlights the importance of reading as a fundamental skill that fosters critical thinking, comprehension, and lifelong learning. The study identifies various aspects affecting reading proficiency. It employed a descriptive survey method using questionnaires to gather data. This method helps to assess how specific aspects influence students' reading skills, providing understanding for targeted interventions. A quantitative research design was used to collect and analyze numerical data, identifying patterns and relationships affecting reading performance. The respondents consisted of 85 Grade 5 pupils. The findings reveal that students generally exhibit strong phonics and decoding skills, but struggle with content prediction and summarization. Vocabulary skills are moderate, with students often guessing word meanings through context clues but occasionally skipping difficult terms. Reading fluency is relatively high, though complex texts present challenges. Visualization skills, such as forming mental images, are moderately developed while comparing and contrasting abilities are notably strong. Inferencing skills, although present, show inconsistency, especially with summarization tasks. The study highlights the role of libraries in enhancing reading comprehension. It suggests that libraries can offer diverse reading materials, organize activities, and provide visual aids to foster critical thinking. To sum up it is recommended that school libraries implement targeted programs to strengthen phonics, vocabulary, and fluency skills. It also suggests promoting visualization and inferencing strategies through workshops and interactive learning activities, aiming to boost students' overall reading proficiency and academic performance.
