Abstract
Enhancing literacy and comprehension in science education requires innovative instructional strategies. This study aimed to design and develop a storybook-based instructional material using the ADDIE model to improve Grade 9 students' literacy skills and comprehension in Science. The material was aligned with DepEd Learning Competencies and evaluated for content, instructional, and technical quality. A quasi-experimental design was employed with 30 Grade 9 students, divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group used the storybook-based material, while the control group was taught through traditional methods. Findings revealed that students in the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher comprehension and retention than those in the control group. The instructional material received positive evaluations for its clear learning objectives, structured content, and engaging visual elements, which enhanced motivation and participation. These results highlight the effectiveness of integrating narrative-driven, multimedia-enhanced instructional resources in science education. While the material proved effective, minor refinements in visual design could further enhance its instructional impact. Future research could examine its long-term effects on retention and critical thinking skills, as well as its applicability across different grade levels and subjects. Integrating digital and interactive elements may further enhance engagement, while qualitative studies could provide deeper insights into students’ learning experiences. Comparative studies with other innovative teaching strategies are also recommended to improve science education practices.
