Abstract
This study examines the impact of child labor on the academic performance of secondary school students in the state of Bihar. Four research questions and four hypotheses were used for the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design and was conducted using Taro Yaman's formula to arrive at a usable sample size of 390 respondents from a population of 15784 secondary school students in the local government areas. The researcher's structured instrument called Child Labor Assessment Instrument (CLAI) was used to collect data for the study. Descriptive statistics of the mean were used to answer the research questions while inferential statistics of the χ-test was used to test the null hypothesis at the 0.05 significance level. The findings of the study revealed that there is no significant difference in the average response of secondary school students on the extent to which street hawking, domestic work, commercial sexual exploitation and street begging affect their academic performance in the cities of Bihar . It is also revealed that to a high extent, street hawking, domestic work, commercial sexual exploitation and street begging negatively affect the academic performance of secondary school students in the city of Bihar. It was therefore recommended that counselors and NGOs need to engage in advocacy campaigns, continuous sensitization and counseling regarding the dangers of child labor on students and society. Again, the government needs to implement and enforce established policies against child labor and ensure rehabilitation of victims of child labor.
