Abstract
The article examines the contribution of Christian missionaries in nation building through the project of education. As Christianity celebrates pluralism within the religion, several Christian missionaries arrived in India and changed the lives of many Indians. The article takes Jesuit education as a case to understand how the Jesuit values contributed to nation building. Equal and effective access to education for all including marginalized communities is a constitutional guarantee. This work intends to understand and sketch the Jesuit mission’s crucial role in India’s higher education promotional initiatives in the light of the existing legal and policy measures. It answers the question as to how the Jesuit higher education mission has been proactive in advancing countries higher education ambitions, in particular concerning those who belong to the poor, marginalised and discriminated communities. In this connection a case study on Jesuit experience demonstrates its commitments in educating underprivileged students.
