Abstract
The continuous rise in antimicrobial resistance has led to an unending search for new, cheaper, and safer sources of antimicrobials. Antibiotic resistance is a challenging health problem that can’t be over looked in the coming years. Considering that little advancement has been made in the discovery of antibiotics especially those effective against drug-resistant strains, use of alternative methods could be the best way to resolve this problem. Mushrooms are known to possess bioactive metabolites, which can serve as pharmaceutical agents. The antimicrobial activity of aqueous and methanol extracts from edible mushrooms Pleurotus ostreatus and Agaricus bisporus against four pathogenic bacterial strains; Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the yeast Candida albicanswere evaluated using the agar well diffusion method. This paper outlines the most frequent antibiotic-resistant bacteria and describes the advantageous and limitations of approach that have been proposed to control them.
