LILITH IN BIBLE AND ZOHAR: GENESIS AND PSYCHOGENESIS OF THE ARCHETYPAL FEMININE

Lilith as the primordial image of womanhood—Adam’s first wife—is an elusive figure hidden in the dark sub-soil of woman’s psyche as the transformative aspect. Genesis of woman in the light of Biblical and Zoharic myths (Gen 1:27, 2:22, 3:24 and Zohar I 19b, 54b, III 19a-b, 69a-b) reveal two primordial images of the Archetypal Feminine—Lilith and Eve. The two are not different psychological types; rather they cohabit and collectively constitute the undifferentiated psyche of woman which is explored in the paper. Reflections are also presented on the subjective understanding of the sacredness and the psychogenesis of Lilith in woman’s personal life.
