Abstract
The Indian Railways, one of the largest rail networks in the world, plays a pivotal role in the country's transportation infrastructure. However, the conventional railway system is associated with significant environmental challenges, including high energy consumption and emissions. Its explores the application of green technology in the Indian Railways to address these environmental concerns and enhance sustainability. The study begins with an overview of the current state of the Indian Railways, emphasizing the environmental impact of traditional operations. It discusses the global context of adopting green technologies in transportation and highlights the need for sustainable practices in the railway sector. The research delves into specific green technology solutions implemented in Indian Railways, including the adoption of energy-efficient locomotives, integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, and the implementation of eco-friendly practices in rail infrastructure and waste management. The Ministry of Railways has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030. Case studies provide insight into successful applications of green technology, showcasing the economic and environmental benefits. Identifying challenges and opportunities, the study explores obstacles faced in the implementation of green technology and suggests strategies for overcoming them. Lessons learned from global railway systems contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the potential for sustainable development in the Indian Railways This paper contributes valuable insights into the ongoing efforts to make the Indian Railways more sustainable, providing a foundation for further research and policy development in the realm of green technology adoption in large-scale transportation systems.
