CONSTRAINTS OF RURAL YOUTH IN ACCESSING AGRICULTURAL EMPLOYMENT IN THE RURAL COMMUNE OF LOPARY

Agriculture is the main source of income for rural populations and provides jobs for young people. However, rural youth who decide to engage in agriculture face constraints such as limited access to land, demographic pressure, and inadequate agricultural infrastructure. This research examines the conditions governing rural youths’ access to the means of production needed for their integration into agricultural activities. The study is based on field observations, a survey of a sample of 60 rural youth in the rural commune of Lopary, and interviews with key informants. The findings show that agriculture does not generate enough jobs for young people in rural areas due to multiple constraints related to production factors, particularly access to land. Similarly, the shift towards non-agricultural activities faces many challenges, notably the lack of infrastructure in rural areas and the low level of knowledge and skills required to access employment, whether in urban or rural settings. We suggest that improving rural education and training, tailored to local needs and realities, would strengthen young people’s capacities and skills. In addition, public policies that support the integration of rural youth, along with investments in infrastructure and the agri-food industry, should help safeguard employment for young people in rural areas.
