Abstract
Formalin is commonly used illegally as a preservative in fishery products to extend shelf life, even though it is toxic and prohibited in food. This study aimed to determine the presence of formalin in five different types of fresh fish sold at Ciroyom Market in Andir District, Bandung City, West Java. The five fish species analyzed were Kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis), Indian Mackerel (Rastrelliger sp.), Yellowtail Fusilier (Caesio cuning), Red Snapper (Lutjanus bitaeniatus), and Narrow-barred Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus commersonii). The qualitative test employed Fehling's A and Fehling's B reagents, which react with formaldehyde to produce a characteristic color change. A total of 25 fish samples, five from each species, were examined in the laboratory. The results showed no color change or brick-red precipitate in any of the samples, indicating the absence of formalin contamination. In conclusion, since none of the five fresh fish species tested at Ciroyom Market contained formalin, the fish sold there are relatively safe from formalin contamination. However, regular inspections and education for traders remain essential to prevent potential misuse of hazardous preservatives
