Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigated the length–weight relationships and environmental conditions of two squid species, Uroteuthis duvaucelii and Sepioteuthis lessoniana, caught by local fishers in Pananjung, Pangandaran, West Java, Indonesia. Specimens were collected during field surveys and measured in the laboratory for dorsal mantle length and body weight. Length–weight relationships were determined using the allometric growth model W=aLb, and the relative condition factor (Kn) was calculated to assess the physiological status of each specimen. Environmental parameters, including seawater temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and pH, were measured in situ at the sampling site. The results showed that both squid species exhibited negative allometric growth (b < 3), indicating that increases in length occurred at a faster rate than increases in weight. The mean Kn values for both species were close to 1.0, suggesting that individuals were in good condition and inhabiting a stable environment with adequate food availability and moderate predation pressure. These results indicate that the coastal waters of Pananjung provide suitable conditions for the growth and survival of both squid species. This study provides baseline data that are valuable for monitoring squid population dynamics and informing sustainable management of small-scale squid fisheries along the southern coast of Java.
