Abstract
This study aimed to assess the proficiency level of Grade 7 students in solving both simple and complex mathematical problems in English and Filipino. This involved ninety (90) Grade 7 students from an integrated school in Sorsogon City, Philippines, using English and Filipino tests as research instruments. The mathematical problems focused on basic arithmetic operations of decimal numbers with whole numbers, discount and ratio which are competencies in Grade 6 Mathematics. The results of this study indicated that the students are not proficient in solving simple and complex mathematical problems in both English and Filipino. The relationship between their proficiency across languages is significant, however, a notable difference exists in students' problem solving proficiency for complex problems across the two languages. The students demonstrated improved performance when complex mathematical word problems were presented in Filipino. It is therefore suggested to include Filipino translations of English mathematical problems to support students' comprehension. This bilingual strategy can help ensure that learners thoroughly understand the problems and engage with them more effectively.
