Abstract
This study endeavored to establish the significance of the effect of web-based instruction on the motivational beliefs and academic achievement of the students in learning Mathematics. A quantitative quasi-experimental research design was implemented to the two general class sections of Grade 10 students in Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School, Nabunturan West District, Schools Division of Davao de Oro. Each group has 40 students: a total of 80 students as subjects of the study. A researcher-made questionnaire in Mathematics was utilized as a research instrument to measure the academic achievement of the students while an adapted questionnaire was utilized to gauge their motivational beliefs in learning Mathematics. The instruments were subjected to validity and reliability measures. Descriptive analysis showed that the level of the onset motivational beliefs of the students in learning Mathematics is moderate for both the control and experimental groups. Subsequently, the control group exposed to interactive discussion showed high motivational beliefs while the experimental group exposed in web-based instruction had a very high level of motivational beliefs in learning Mathematics. The competency level of the students in the control group was low in the pretest while moderate in the posttest. Similarly, the experimental group’s competency level was low in the pretest and moderate in the posttest. The test for independent samples revealed that the experimental group showed significantly higher level of motivational beliefs in learning Mathematics as compared to the control group. Finally, the experimental group exposed to web-based instruction scored significantly higher in their posttest as compared to the control group. Findings were conclusive that the use of web-based instruction in teaching Mathematics significantly improved the motivational beliefs and academic achievement of the students in Mathematics.
