Abstract
This research investigated how manipulatives were used in mathematics teaching and had an impact on student participation in Sorsogon City secondary schools. This qualitative study probed how the six identified math teachers used manipulatives in class. The teacher informants' interview results gave insight into the range of manipulatives used, and how they had an impact on student participation. It was also discovered that manipulatives are chosen according to the following criteria as identified by mathematics teachers: appropriateness to lesson goals, accessibility, and appropriateness to students' interest and capability. In addition, manipulatives were used strategically by teachers in various stages of the lesson like in planning and designing, lesson proper, and evaluation. Furthermore, student informant interviews validated that the effectiveness of manipulatives in teaching and learning. Students also observed that when manipulatives are used in the lessons, they feel more interest, enjoyment, and comprehension of the lessons. With the findings, the study constructed a systeMATHic guidebook to aid teachers in the effective selection, use, and evaluation of manipulatives.
