Abstract
The city of Antananarivo is supplied with fuelwood mainly from peasant forest eucalyptus plantations. Anjozorobe
district is among the top three districts contributing their share in the capital wood fuel supply. This study aims to
assess the potential of peasant eucalyptus plantations in Anjozorobe district for a sustainable supply of fuelwood. The
methods adopted are mapping and analysis of forest inventory data. The results show an exploitable area of 14 378 ha
in any district in 2018. An increase in eucalyptus plantations of 374 ha per year has been observed in 12 years, an
increase of 7% per year. In total, the surface gains are estimated at 4 488 ha in 12 years. For coppices, 3675
individuals were observed during the inventory. The mean diameter of the coppice stands was estimated to be 4.69 ±
0.18 cm. Over 95% of the individuals were individuals in the diameter class between 0 to 10 cm. The trend of the
number of stems per diameter class shows a regular decrease in the number of stems when moving from one diameter
class to the next. This shows a good state of natural regeneration of the eucalyptus coppice plantations.). This also
explains at the same time an intensive exploitation of the stands with a shortening of the duration of the cutting rotation.
In the face of the current population growth and urbanization, recovery measures are essential.
