Abstract
Hyderabad, a rapidly urbanizing Indian metropolis, faces escalating challenges in municipal solid waste management, with organic waste accounting for over 60% of the total. This paper investigates the implementation and impact of municipal biogas projects in Hyderabad, focusing on the Bowenpally Mandi and Dhoolapally case studies as models of waste-to-energy transformation. By converting organic waste into renewable biogas and organic fertilizer, these initiatives reduce landfill dependency, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and promote sustainable resource use. The study highlights significant environmental, economic, and social benefits, including energy savings, cost reductions, job creation, and improved community health. It also explores governance challenges and underscores the importance of policy support, community engagement, and technological innovation. The paper concludes that municipal biogas initiatives offer a viable blueprint for sustainable urban development in rapidly growing Indian cities, aligning with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
