Abstract
The ability of a substance to damage or cause death to cells is known as cytotoxicity. Various everyday products contain substances with cytotoxic and genotoxic potential, unknowingly causing adverse effects on human health. Proper cell cycle function is critical for regulating various aspects of an organism's life and ensuring proper growth, development, maintenance, and function. Cytotoxic and genotoxic indicators are mainly related to disturbances during the cell cycle at both cellular and molecular levels. While cytotoxic anomalies can sometimes be reversible, genotoxic effects are often irreversible, posing a significant threat to future generations. As people become aware of the harms caused by artificial chemicals, they are switching to natural alternatives, some of which have also been reported to be cytotoxic. Many cytotoxic manifestations have been linked to cancer. Using artificial substances in large amounts without screening for cytotoxicity and genotoxicity can increase the potential risk of biomagnification, causing deleterious effects in humans such as genetic defects. The test for cytogenotoxicity includes both plant and animal models, but mostly uses onion root apical meristem cells due to their similar cellular and molecular mechanisms to human cells. This study conducts a thorough and in-depth analysis of research findings and literature to raise awareness about common products with cytotoxic potential. This analysis aims to develop eco-friendly and beneficial products for daily use with negligible adverse health effects. By understanding the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of everyday products, individuals can make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Furthermore, this research can lead to the development of safer alternatives and more effective regulations to protect public health.
